My Link Building Strategy

I run quite a few websites. Many of them rank number one on Google and other search engines. Most of them are at least in top 20 of search engines. The credit to these good ranking goes to:

  1. Good and unique content on website
  2. Strong link building strategy

Content is king, everybody says and knows. So I m not taking this topic right now. Let me talk about creating a strong link building strategy. How and when to get what types of links? This is the topic I am going to address. But instead of making it as a lecture, I am just going to present how do I do it.

This is the process of my website development and link building:

  • Day 1: Buy a domain which is good for the keyword you are looking to create a website.
  • Day 2: Create one page website (around 500 words) based on your keyword(s) and give around 3 to 4 links to wikipedia’s pages (related to your keyword). These wiki links will help search engines to assign a website-category to your site. Then get one backlink (I normally get this link from one of my own directory) for this site. Then forget about this site for a month. (in this time, you can start thinking on your next keyword site.)
  • Day 30 (After one month): Expand the website to 5 pages of content and get 4 more links, one each from a directory, a blog post, a social networking site and a regular site. Then again forget this site for a month.
  • Day 60 (after two months): This is the time when I start working on the website to make it 100 page website. I make sure that I have to get one back-link for each of my page I am creating. So after this phase is completed, I have just 5 links to my homepage and 1 link each to my internal pages. This internal pages link prevent your pages going into supplemental index of google.
  • Day 90 (after 3 months): This is the time when I start my FREE directory submissions. I follow all the new-directory announcement sections in various webmaster forums for new directories. These links are the easiest to get and for free. Other than these, I submit to around 1000 free directory list. It takes around 10 days of work.
  • Day 120: (after 4 months): At this time, I start looking for 3-way link exchanges. I do it in two ways. First one, the old regular method, by emailing the webmaster (but with very much personal touch). Secondly, on webmaster forums like Digital Point. I avoid doing reciprocal link exchange.
  • Day 150 (after 5 months): I add around 100 more pages to my site with 1 link each for every new page. Yes, this takes a lot of time but is really worth it. This is the point where I do around 20 article submissions. for backlinks to the homepage.
  • Day 180 (after 6 months): This is the time when I start spending money on the site to get links. I start submitting to paid directories (including good ones like: yahoo.com, botw.org, addalink.org, alivedirectory.com etc.). I start buying paid content-embedded links. I strictly avoid getting any site-wide links (except for directories, which is a different story all together).

This is normally the time when my site gets around of sandbox and start earning me some good amount. At this point, I add this site to around 20 of my own directories (with all different TITLE and description). I also add at-least 20 of my internal pages (different pages to different directories) from this site to each of my 20 directories (total of 400 links). These directories of mine are unknown to general public and is sole purpose of getting links to my own sites.

So, this is the time when my site is running full fledged. After this I CONSTANTLY keep adding the content as well as back-links.

After this, I make sure that 50% of the profit from the site should go back into the link building for the website. When the website has reached top 3 in search engines, it automatically starts getting all those .gov or .edu etc. links, so I reduce my budget from 50% to around 25% and keep the 75% to myself.

So to achieve the full strength, my sites takes at least one year.
Google says, I need time to put your site on top, I give it enough time.

So thats my website development and link building strategy. What is your strategy? Please comment and do let me know.

Edit: Well, these days it has become quite easy to set up your link building strategy by using networks like TNX where you can decide how many unique links to build over time.

In reality also, it works. But you need to be developing more than one website. So you can give each website its own time.

I remember you saying this @ the delhi seo meet. Truly very very helpful. I would request to come up with more and more articles.

    Great writeup, very helpful tips.

Also one question, is it fine to link internal pages (all) as well as the hompage from the same directory? :)

  9. Amit Bhawani responded on 16 Apr 2007 at 9:19 am #

Now, this is for a Static Website, how would you proceed for a dynamic website which is based on a script and needs to be updated on daily basis?

  10. jimkarter responded on 16 Apr 2007 at 11:04 pm #

Neeraj, For getting links to my internal pages, I am not only using my own directories and blogs, but I also use network of people who have similar backlinks needs as mine. So I help them and they help me to get backlinks. :D You can find many of them at DP if you have good repo.

Sunny, I think linking to homepage and internal pages from same directory is a good idea until you overdo it. Linking to internal pages will surely help them avoiding supplemental.

Amit, all dynamic websites are in fact dynamic to a level only (for example: blogs, forums etc.) but static in other sense to some level. Please try to optimized them to make it more search engine friendly (and make them look static to search engines). Then you can surely submit some of its pages (eg: category pages, tags pages etc.) for backlinks.

Youtube grew to a selling value of $ 1.6 bld in 18 months, and you suggest this promotion strategy of 1 year, after which you’ll have aproximately no traffic / success ? lols…

  12. jimkarter responded on 17 Apr 2007 at 8:24 pm #

Yes, they became $1.6 billion in 18 months. But are you forgetting 1.6 million sites which couldn’t make $18 in 18 months and just died? What is the probability of a new site getting into?

Anyways, its just what I use and I thought I should tell people. I am not asking anybody to adopt it or use it in any way(s). But just my 2 cents.

  13. Xenyo responded on 17 Apr 2007 at 8:57 pm #

Great article Jim and very structured. Very easy to see that it’ll work but obviously requires commitment and dedication as well as alot of directories :P

  14. Casey responded on 17 Apr 2007 at 10:16 pm #

I agree with Xenyo. This requires commitment and dedication. People who think they could make money the moment they put up a site should read this article.

By the way, could you please share with us that after how many months you start making profit from a new site you’ve setup using this strategy? and how much money you need to spend before making a profit? Thank you.

  15. jimkarter responded on 17 Apr 2007 at 10:31 pm #

My typical sites which are put into such plans starts getting following traffic (and the revenue depends on traffic and niche):

    End of:
1st month: 15 unique visitors per month
2nd month: 50 unique visitors per month
3rd month: 500 unique visitors per month
4th month: 1,500 unique visitors per month
5th month: 3,000 unique visitors per month
6th month: 6,000 unique visitors per month
9th month: 15,000 unique visitors per month
12th month: 25,000 unique visitors per month
18th month: 50,000 unique visitors per month

And yes, it surely need commitment, dedication and time.
So the better way to use this strategy is work on more than one websites.

Do you pick sites based on your interests or more based on the keyword potential.

Also do you write the content once the site is up and running or do you use feeds/purchased content?

    Thanks for the info.

    Hello Jim,
I have one question about articles.
I have 2 sites. One site is about 3 years old and one new site.
Do you think that is better if I use the articles from Ezine to post on my site? In this case, i can post more articles a day on my website/blog. Or, do you think it is better to write my own article and post on my site? in this case, the number or articles will be limited because i don’t have time to write many articles a day.
What is the difference of using my own articles and Ezine articles in terms of new site v.s. old site?
    Thanks.

  40. Jim Karter responded on 07 Mar 2008 at 10:13 pm #

Copying the articles from ezinearticles site would harm your site instead of benefiting it, because of duplicate content. So the best way is the write your own articles.

Or, if you don’t have much time to think and write your articles, may be you can re-write (in your own words) the articles already at ezinearticles.

The wikipedia: how did you get links exactly? or do you mean you post links from your site to the wiki pages etc? or you write your own wiki with links to your site?

And secondly: for a site which is already 1 year and still just gets 50 hits a day. it has about 200 baclinks from directories but where would a site like this begin in your masterplan?

From the beginning or from say month 3?

When you talk about getting links in step 3. You mention a regular website. I have two questions about that. How do you define a regular website? Is it just a blog that is not your own. Also, are you talking about getting a backlink to that site? Does it matter if the link is embedded with a nofollow tag like in a blog comment?

This step by step guide is greatly appreciated! You don’t have to share your hard fought knowledge and all of us who are reading your guide appreciate your willingness to help us.
Someone asked earlier about linking to Wikipedia. That’s a brilliant suggestion, but I too wondered about the 3 to 4 links to Wiki. I did more reading about that and Wiki is sticky about some content. Any suggestions about that? I read that if you go in to an existing article and add references you are much more likely to get your Wiki links through.

  63. SuttonBayMedia responded on 06 May 2008 at 5:02 am #

One more question and another thanks to you. First the thanks…I have posted several times in Digital Point about how to organize multiple websites, how to ‘manage’ that many sites and most importantly, how to get those sites up and running. I’ve never read a better step 1, step 2 guide and the guidance of one month, two months etc. That’s the most valuable because too many of us are anxious to have it happen overnight and are disappointed when the few or many directory submissions don’t do anything. So thanks again.
Now the question: Would you consider posting an article about directory creation? I always wonder why digitalpoint people are continually creating directories and now I understand. I imagine in the next year I’ll need to make one so some tips on getting started would be great.

  64. Jim Karter responded on 06 May 2008 at 11:55 am #

..As we have numerous social bookmarking sites now, these can also be useful to create back-links for internal pages along with web directories.

    Very Informative Post Jim,
You have used the right strategy. Invest some time in one and leave then go for next.
    I like that.

I feel you do take a bit more time than others..but you make sure that your site is not sandboxed.

    good strategy..

For people who are just starting out, its tough to wait more than 12 months to start seeing income.

Very interesting strategy. Your method takes a lot of discipline and dedication. If you are getting 50,000 unique visitors per month then it is well worth it.

Though your link building strategy seems to be quiet solid but it seems to be a lot of hard work and extreme patience involved. I know that it takes very hard work to succeed and the ones who can endure the challenge can only succeed. Anyway thanks a lot for sharing your personal link building strategy - you are the only person I have seen on Net that shares his own link building strategy.
