Do You Backup?

I have seen times when I was so stressed up because of those server hard disk crashes and backup problems. I had a crash recently on my shared server with two days downtime and some loss of data. These crashes I think, will happen to everybody. It is not the question whether it will or it will not. The question is “when”. So now I am ready for them. Are you?

Previously, I used to think that disk crash happens to people like accident and why would it happen to me. But it did. And, I learned my lesson. Now I keep all my backups ready. I now do my backups quite frequently. I also have scripts running on my servers which do backups on my other servers on weekly basis.

BackupI have also created online account on Diino and Mozy, the two best free online backup service providing companies. These are the two best Free Online Backup Providers. Both of them provide 2 Gb each of free online account. So I keep one copy of my data online for the worst case scenarios like if some crash happens when I don’t have access to our backup computer (vacation) or some other similar situation.

And, there is no harm in opening just two free accounts and keep one copy online. Both of them are very secure and provides very good service.

So, if you have a website but you don’t do your backups, start the habit today. Learn this lesson from other people’s mistake. Don’t do it yourself. Don’t delay your backups till tomorrow. Do it today. And yes, don’t forget to open those free accounts at Diino and Mozy to get 4 Gb of storage to keep your backups online.

Best of luck.

Thats a good idea. Also, I think one 4gb re-writable DVD could also be beneficial for monthly backups.

Thanks for the Great advice. What kind of data you likes to backup Jim ?

Also if u zip/tar it and than save it, than how to do you restore it ? I haven’t checked the links, will check them later and will explore on myself but felt to ask the more generic questions first.

How about server backups of your website ? who does that ?

Backup is hardest work for me. Each of my site has over 6GB data + database. cPanel cannot generate full backup and some time, i have to download via FPT!

Next time, may I get a VPS to use SHH for easier!
