Blog Success and Goals

How to measure the success of a blog - This is the question asked many times on many blogs and forums and was asked to me as well. Many people who run their blogs has their own different ways of measuring success.

These are some of the factors on which people measure the success of their blogs:

  • The amount of revenue earned
  • Number of people subscribing to their RSS feeds
  • No. of Comments/No. of posts ratio.
  • Total visitors or page views per month
  • Technorati Rank
  • How much time each visitor on the blog
  • Search engine ranking
  • And some more…

In my view, a blog is a successful one if the author meets the goal(s) he/she has set for the blog. You may have set a goal of 5,000 RSS feeds, or may be an earning of $1,000/month or making 365 posts per year with at-least 10 comments each. So it is up-to you how you set your goals for your blog. And, when you meet those goals, you can call yourself successful.

What goal I have set?
I have set a very simple goal: 1 million page view per month

I think if I keep trying to get my goal, all the other things will keep getting aligned automatically. Whether its number of RSS readers of earnings, all of them will keep getting on track if I keep doing right quality and amount of posts, the community will keep building. I am also aware that I can get around $10 type of CPM from my visitors, so I know what this should I expect in terms of earnings when I see my blog as successful one in my own eyes.

So, is my blog successful?
No. Far from it. In January 2008, I crossed the 80,000 page views mark. In February I am expecting to cross 100,000 page views. So that will make it 10% of my goal.

Page view stats

So, when am I expecting to reach my goal and call my blog a successful one?
I think it would take around an year or so for it to grow 125 times. I will keep measuring my goal from time to time, to remind myself where I am headed.

I will surely keep visiting. I especially like the personalization you do which makes it better to relate to the content.

It’s a nice posting. Many articles only talk about how to raise the blog’s traffic…I think we should not concern only to the quantity but also the quality of the traffic. In the factors you mentioned, those has specify the criteria of traffic quality, such as number of people subscribing to their RSS feeds and no. of comments/no. of posts ratio.

I think that your goal setting is also the recipe of online success - but not only. Set a goal, and make everything you can in order to achieve it.

My measuring stick is page one results on Google.
Everything else can be gamed or may be replaced by other similar services.

The most used search engine + page 1 = pure gold.
