Adsense is not always the best

Monetize your web site

I have a website related to some anti aging hormone. This site is around 3 years old and makes around $600/month consistently with adsense from last one year. This site has top3 ranking on most search engines fir some very good keywords and gets around 1000 uniques a day. So, with those 30,000 uniques and $600 in adsense, I was happy with $20 eCPM. Who wouldn’t I be? It looks like good eCPM. So, I was very happy with this site. Till two days back.

So what happened two days back?
I received an email from one of my site competitors, that he is willing to buy my site (they saw the search engine rankings for it). I told them that the site is not for sale. Then, they gave me an offer which was very difficult to refuse. An offer of $25,000 for the site. I was shocked. Is my site that worth? How he is going to monetize the site making that much money? All these questions came to my mind.

By first seeing the offer price, I was just about to sell it. But then I thought, why not try and see what he is going to do with the site. I can do that myself and see if my earnings can be increased from this site. Thats it, thats where I started researching the related sites and found that most of my competitors are not running adsense but running some affiliate links which pays very good (upto $100 per sale).

I put those affiliate links EXACTLY 48 hours from this post (exactly two days back) and here is what stats I see for those 48 hours:

1.gif

21.gif

3.gif

So in 48 hours, thats a total of $797.52. So if I keep earning that sort of money everyday, that would be around $11,962.80 per month from this site alone. Even if I take the figures little down to $250 per day (instead of current $396.26), I should be making at-least $7,500 per month from this site, which was only making me $600 per month through adsense http://www.jimkarter.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=127
Loading…till now.

So, adsense is not always the best way to monetize your website. If you can the right type of affiliate programs which pays good, you can surely earn much more.

So, did I sell my site for $25,000? You know the answer. At the end of month, I will update you people how the month went.

So, whats next?
As of now I have kept the adsense on the site. I will keep them for next 5 days more (total of seven days). Then I will remove them for next 7 days and will compare my affiliate earnings from these two weeks. That will decide whether I should remove adsense completely from the site or not. My feeling says, adsense will go. What do you say?

Right on!… But I guess you should reduce the figures by 20% because there may be charge backs (if those products have money back guarantee)

Deepak, that is why I have put the realistic figure of $250 per day instead of current at around $400 per day. :) Though the products are consumables.

Maybe you will get a final answer by yourself at the end of the month. Definitely you don’t sell right now. Good luck!

One of the favorite things about your blog and how you operate is that you are not afraid to test and you are always looking to diversify your earnings.

If that is all adsense is paying for this niche then you better get to doing some PPC as it looks like their will be keyword bargains :)

Hmmm…. Interesting stuff. I need to get myself a reader base before I put on ads. But with all these people writing about how much adsense stinks, I think I’ll stay away from it.

Jake, I guess AdSense does not stink. Only in the situations where your find the right affiliate products it will get profitable. Some niches have no affiliate products at all, in that case the only way to monetize your pages are AdSense. It makes sense :)

  11. jimkarter responded on 10 Feb 2008 at 10:01 pm #

I agree. I think in the webmaster’s view, adsense is the best thing that can happen to internet. But as Deepak pointed out, if you get the right affiliate products, it will be more profitable.

Adsense also suits when you have too many sites and can’t give proper attention to each of them…. put adsense on each one and happy thinking about cpm. To make your site a hit with affiliate ads you need to treat it like a baby ….. like we do with our blog …each day think about ….which affiliate to use … how long to use… any new high paying offer in market ….. think about how user will respond to the each page and overall profability.

We are saved from all these by using adsense as everything is done by google and affiliate marketer sitting on other side!

$7500 is sweet and 10x the adsense earnings. Affiliates are the new adsense.

Nice transformation. I think the site will produce better results without Adsense, as the focus of the visitor will have fewer options of spreading.

The problem is trying to find that affiliate product that will convert for your site. I cannot find the correct formula for most of my sites.

I do, however, have one site that makes 75% more than adsense with a specific affiliate product. Took some time to find the right one and that sucks. If only all my sites could make as much.

  17. jimkarter responded on 11 Feb 2008 at 11:20 am #

Yes, it is really difficult to find the right affiliate product which will work. But when you find one, you are the happy person.:)

[…] What are the Best Ad Networks to Monetize Your Websites or Blogs? Posted on January 17th, 2008 by jjmao When beginner internet marketers think of monetizing their websites and blogs, very likely, the Google AdSense will pop to mind first. Sometimes, it is the only way they know. But depend on the niches, Adsense is not always the best solution for your websites or blogs. Not mention putting all your eggs in one basket is very risky for your online business, using multiple ad networks to monetize the websites or blogs may increase your online income by several folds. What are other alternatives for Google Adsense? There are plenty of them. A site has a list of 130 ad networks. That is not even the exhaustive list. More ad networks have been created since the list was first published about nine months ago. It is time consuming to examine or even test trial all of them. Other internet marketers have tested all of them. Here is a much smaller list we think the best ad networks offered online. […]

Jim you should try to find the hidden niche like this one you figured. Adsense isn’t worth for such a site with 1000 unique visitors a month for the perfect niche. OMG the site is definitely worth the $25,000 offer! I have an adult blog which receives around 700 visitors a day but I don’t see any good monetization option because:

    1. non english content
    2. not enough good affiliate programs to promote
    3. visitors arent interested on the current monetizing methods I have and I don’t find another good one to promote.

May be mine is a hidden niche but I guess it will take some time to find gold from it! Anyway I will be having an eye on how much did you make from the site. Don’t forget to update us.
