Case Study: Chemotherapy Site: Follow-Up 1

This is the follow-up post for my making money in long term case study. In that post I said that I will be following up on this post once or twice a month. So here is the first follow-up post.

After my first post (when the case study on this chemotherapy site started), I added some content. Now the website has around 30 pages of content. I have just submitted to 2 good directories today in their health section. I have still to see the backlinks. So till now, the only backlinks were from this case study only (is that the strategy too? ;) ).

So as of today here are the stats:

  • URL: Chemotherapy
  • Earning Goal: Making $1000/month after one year.
  • Time elapsed from the case study start: 28 days
  • Money invested till now: $94.00 (older) + $59.98 (directory submissions) = $153.98
  • Total uniques in March: 846 ( out of which 44 from search engines)
  • Total uniques in April (till 6th): 156 ( out of which 34 from search engines
  • Total money earned: $0.00 (not yet monetized)

So, as you can see that I have added some content (around 30 articles in total) based on chemotherapy and chemotherapy related keywords. These articles on chemotherapy were written by somebody in my team (consider myself), so I have not included the cost of it into the expenses.

Chemotherapy

So what next?
In the next 30 days, when I will see that I am getting around 1500 uniques for the month, I will add around 30 more pages and around 10 to 15 more back-links. When I will reach the level of 150 page views per day, I will start monetizing the website (through adsense first). Only after putting the ads on, I will start doing article based bum marketing for chemotherapy and health related keywords. I will do 10 articles to start with.

So thats the plan. Subscribe to my RSS feed (if you have not done so already) and stay updated on the developments.

This website is using the wordpress blog but is made to not-look-like a blog. The chemotherapy articles section is actually the little modified version of the a site-map plugin. I have also added a disclaimer at the bottom of the homepage that this is site provides general information about chemotherapy and should not be taken as a medical or health advice.

this is interesting case study. people sale these things as ebooks and makes money. you are providing this free of cost with proof as well.

    hats off to you.

    best of luck

one thing, on kemo….. site’s 404 page u have put Google search which is from jimkarter.com
    does this satisfy Google TOS.

  8. Jim Karter responded on 07 Apr 2008 at 10:24 am #

My team is writing these articles.

@webmaster, the main keyword is “chemotherapy”. But I am targetting many other keywords also. One per page.

@raoraj, that is not a problem with google but that is actually an error. :) It is actually the same them which I use on jimkarter.com (with some tweaks). So the same 404 page is coming there. I will just edit it.:) Thank you for letting me know.

  9. Bujes responded on 07 Apr 2008 at 10:30 am #

This case study is very interesting. I’m also working on similar site, but in other niche.

Do you think submiting to paid directories really helps? Is it worth $40?

  10. klee responded on 07 Apr 2008 at 10:41 am #

    > (is that the strategy too? ;) ).

    funny.

You have already answered 2 of my questions which is very helpful.

    If you are able:

I am curious if you are concerned about google adsense “smart pricing”. I have read that a lower performing (whatever that may mean) site will have a negative affect on your account income overall. Not sure how important this is.

Do you run kontera and text-link-ads networks on the same sites (not sure if thats possible)? or, do you diversify this as well, with sites running entirely different networks?

    thank you

  11. chenzen responded on 07 Apr 2008 at 11:04 am #

The best part is you are promoting a slow
but steady development of a website in contrast to make a million bucks in 7 days or less type of hype prevalent nowadays.

Certainly useful for newbies as well as experienced webmasters.

    Keep up the good work.
    Cheers

  12. Jim Karter responded on 07 Apr 2008 at 12:36 pm #

@bujes, paid submission works for some good directories.

@klee, I know right now most of my traiffic is useless (being sent from this site). This is why I am waiting for number to increase from search engine. Then I am not worried about smart pricing.

Aboout kontera and text-link-ads on same site/page is never a problem and works fine.

@MillionEuroMan, I am writing EVERYTHING I am doing with the site. There are no hidden steps or things. This is what I alway emphasize that there are not any hidden secrets. Its just that, do your work and give it the time it needs to return you the fruits.

@jim, I used Adwords Keyword suggestion tool for keyword research and the articles are researched and written by the people in my team.

Hello jim, when are u going to start question answer sessions as i have to clear some of my querries?Waiting for your repy…..thanks

  29. Jim Karter responded on 08 Apr 2008 at 7:19 am #

@Anand, Feel free to ask the questions here or in the questions post

@Nita, No. It doesn’t create any problem. I did not put the ads as of now because the most of the traffic site is getting is from jimkarter.com which I am sure would not be productive for advertisers. So I will put ads when traffic from other sources (read search engines) would be more than this.

@Ajinkya, Just make sure that some portion of the earnings goes back into the website as promotion. That would keep it up and up. Many people forget this very simple step.

Jim, when you write the articles and focus on one keyword per page what keyword density are you trying to hit. Plus article length.

Are these kind of numbers a good idea; minimum 300 word article at 5-8% keyword density.

  44. Shreyas responded on 10 Apr 2008 at 8:37 am #

    Hey!!

I have created a similar site..

But the problem is getting traffic.
    How do you achieve this??

I have received 8 UVs this month which is very low..

  45. Jim Karter responded on 10 Apr 2008 at 9:18 am #

@Adam, I gave ur email also to the person. He will get back to you.

@SEO web hosting, I generally make the page around 500 words (give or take) and the keyword density of 3% to 5%

@Shreyas, link building is required for traffic.

    Hi Jim

Great work with the website and thanks for sharing your knowledge. ;-)

Just a quick question, I’ve checked in Google at how many of your pages are indexed (site:www.echemotherapy.com/) and you have around 26 at this point in time.

I am struggling to get pages indexed on my site, do you know why so many of your pages have been indexed so quickly?
Is it due to the Web Directory submissions or is it that you have lots of words on your pages? Or something else?

    Many thanks.
    Andy

When you decide to start a new website; which format is better/more profitable in your opinion, a website format or a blog one?

    Thank you.

    Jim,

When you are using BOTW and AAL, are you seeing a significant search engine ranking boost, versus what you would get by just linking from your own sites which alredy have good list rankings?

  55. Noggy responded on 17 Apr 2008 at 5:06 pm #

One VERY important aspect I have yet to see mentioned that demotes this to a purely academic exercise is that the domain is close to NINE years old. Why not start out in a competitive niche with a newly registered domain? Most people who follow this study will be starting out with far younger domains. Despite this, thanks for another great post ;)

Are you manually adding the content?

I have had 50 articles rewritten and optimized just sitting in folders on my hard drive. I came across a software that will generate the rewritten pages and add adsense into webpages in 60 sec..

can you recommend any software that will do this?

  59. Jim Karter responded on 27 Apr 2008 at 5:02 am #

I am creating the pages manually.

  60. joe responded on 13 May 2008 at 9:47 pm #

    Jim Karter,

Firstly I would like to say that I think this is a great/helpful case study you are doing and I think that it will help a lot of webmasters.

However I found out some interesting things that your readers may be interested in knowing. You may want to also address my concerns if you are in fact not hiding anything in this case study.

I wondered why you would recommend addalink.org when it has very few links which does not reflect a link directory that should be recommended. There are many others that are much better…and… Why you only paid $59.98 for directory submission(s) when they charge $99 for a featured. Then I found from a who is search that you own it. Hummmm Interesting, no wonder your recommending it. This became clear to me when I noticed you promoting it on DP in your sig and location. So did you pay yourself for a directory submission? This makes one also wonder what else your leaving out? Furthermore it raises the question that is the real money making sceme. One where you make yourself look like this big time net entrepreneur to make people believe it. Thus making this site popular and cashing in on the advertising money that is generated here. Anyone can do fake earnings pictures, it’s not hard. If you are making so much money with your other sites then why waste your time with this blog. If I was making that much I’d be on permanant vactation. I also noticed in DP that you changed your picture from a normal looking guy to this slick looking money maker. Hummmmmmm… About the same time you changed the logo on this site to porche. Would it be the case that your are faking it until you make it?

So how can you pay $60 for directory submissions with an (S) when a featured one from your site is $100. How many did you pay for? 2… Not very smart conciddering addalink.org in not that great of a site. Please understand that I’m not trying to start a fight are belittle you. …and… I am following your moves in a different nich with one of my sites but I just want to be sure I’m not following someone who is misleading me. The way you are doing this case study in the open you must understand that people are smart enough to see the truth. So you may want to reveal everything in the future are this will surely become a disater for you.

  61. Jim Karter responded on 14 May 2008 at 9:06 am #

Please read my comment about the directories? Are you sure I “recommended” that? People asked me where I submitted and I told the directories. I included the fee because that will make this case study the true case study in real sense.

About your other comments/issues, I have nothing to say. :)
