Advertising Offers Which I Hate
These days I am getting a lot of advertising offers from people who think that advertising is too cheap. They want to buy permanent text link based advertising at the price of pennies. Here one of the emails I got recently.
Hello Jim,
I am looking to advertise on your website http://www.jimkarter.com I am interested in placing paragraphs on specific pages of your website, just at the end of the blogpost, before the comments.
The paragraph will be *custom written with maximum 4-5 links to match the content of the site* and you will have the right to edit the contents except Anchor Text. The textlinks will go to non spammy and related websites.
However, since these links are on specific pages. I would be paying only *one time fees* and the paragraphs will stay permanent ie. as long as the page stays.
For your following internal pages I can offer *$60 Total ($10 per post)*:

Looking forward to your reply.
PS: *If this works well I would be doing it on regular basis. I also need your PayPal ID where I can send you payment of our deal.*
Regards

Did you see? The person wants to buy 5 permanent links each on 6 of my most read blog posts for a price of $60. That is $2 per link for a life time. Wow! Is advertising so cheap these days? I really really…. and I mean.. really hate such email.
And the best part, when I politely refused the offer and said. “Sorry, I am not interested in the offer”, the person replied “Why?”.
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Ha ha..well Yesterday I was reading about a case study at Hardvard busienss review about CDNow. Was kind of surprised to know that in 95, the CPM rates were $70
Now there are some companies who are paying $0.05 and are still in the business.
So what are going to reply to him ?

By the way, Jeremy Shoemaker charges $2500 for a review (I had read it on payperpost) and really, all the parameters should be considered before selling a link.
I mean, I think people give aways links for cheap because they think the “space” is unlimited compared to a magazine which charges $2k for an advertisement which has limited space on rent. (assuming both have same user views)

Or not. I’m sure he still gets quite a few quality links for cheap

Irrespective of him being new or old in the field, the killer was ” Why?” part…

Jim, I remember reading on another blog about this guy. Watch he’ll respond with a higher offer and when you say no he’ll offer even more money. He’ll likely go up to $100 per page.

To be fair it is very difficult to value links and advertising on the interweb, especially if you are just starting out.
It would be better for him to ask you what that would cost rather than suggest a price and insult you.

Hello-
Yes, I get those all the time. But someone has to be buying them because how else could that person keep sending them out all the time?

I also received this type of offers. I think they are looking for newbie bloggers who want to have a fast cash.

Definitely cheap…. but just a thought I’d like to put out there… never be offended by an offer. The art of negotiation… instead of refusing, simply state terms that are agreeable to you. You should only walk away from a negotiation table when someone will not agree to your terms; not when you do not agree to theirs.
I always advise thanking someone for their interest in your business and their offer. By explaining why you need a higher figure in order to consider their request, you could be drawing attention to other positive aspects of your business that the other negotiator is not aware of. You never know, they might just agree to your terms. An offer, even a poor one, should IMO always be viewed as a compliment - never an insult.

Thank you Lex. I will surely remember what you have said next time. I think I agree with you on “leave a negotiation when the other person does not agree, not when you don’t agree”.
Thank you.
