Top Web Directory
This is a paid review for the twd.in, the top web directory.
These days its very difficult to get directories which have good page rank as well as some unique content. Around 5 days back, Swapnil asked me to review his directory called top web directory on jimkarter site.
The best part I liked about this directory is that this website also has lots of good content in terms of themes and a blog network to bring in the traffic from search engines. With PR6 on homepage and around 40,000 back-links (shown by yahoo), this website is really a good value for people who want to submit their site for $29.00 for regular listing (with 3 extra deep links) and $49.00 for sponsored listing (with 5 extra deep links). Sponsored listing will get your site ranked above the regular listings. These prices are one time prices and your listings are permanent.
The directory looks pretty good with Pr6 and 40,000 backlinks in google and a very good category structure too. But is there anything which is missing? Well, I saw that the pagerank on some of the internal pages (or actually, many of the internal pages) are missing. I asked Swapnil about it and this is what he has to say:
The internal pages do have backlinks, I registered this domain as a new domain and got PR 4 in the first update, PR 5 in the second and PR 6 in the third, in the third update the PR of inner pages was reduced but most of them still have them.
All the blogs here are PR 5.
Some inner categories too have PR upto 5. All my backlinks are natural and I charge for the review (the links are permanent) so everything is according to the Google TOS.
So, would I consider this as a good investment of $29.00?
Yes is my answer. This is a new directory for me as well (in the sense that I did not know about it 5 days back). So I will be submitting many of my sites to them as well.

I have used directories. I am using them even now. But you need to choose the ones which actually provide value. I have actually two of my websites to the directory just today only (after writing the review).

directories are a waste of time and money. they wont do you any good. you are better off buying a link from a related website.
jim… i understandd you were paid to do the review… but why mislead your readers? i subscribed to your blog because i thought you keep it honest with your readers but this post and the ebook you promoted on dp forums makes me think otherwise.

@bigmac, I write what I feel like. I have myself submitted my sites to this directory. But anyways, its your choice. The first line of the post says that its a paid review, but still I try to be as much un-biased as possible.

Jim, can you write a post outlining the basics of directories and how to best use them? Do you have to promote your articles in the directories or do you just have to write a good article and it will do the work itself?

Each directory has it values I guess. I was reading about this one, and must say that it looked good at first glance. I was off to submit form when I realized that although his homepage is PR6, all of his categories are still PR0. He does have bunch of pages listed on Google though like this one: http://www.twd.in/health/ which are PR5 or more, but these seem to have nothing to do with site listings, they are filled with articles and news.
He might have added directory section recently (144 links listed are also indicating it’s not old) and it will pick up some PR from the rest of his site.
No diss, just my 2c.
