Blog v/s Regular Website

ADD YOUR WEBSITE

Website or BlogMany people have asked me what is the best way to start making money. Should they start with a blog or a regular website. What are the benefits in each. I suggest different things for different people. Here are the main differences I see.

If you are a writer kind of person who loves writing, then I would suggest to go for a blog. But remember that people expect regular updated blog, else they will leave and never return. On the other hand, if you are a one time sort of person who wants to make money on a residual basis, but don’t want to write quite often, go for a website.

Remember that blog’s content is fetched by search engines and social media sites quite fast (as wordpress pings them), on the other hand, regular content may get some time to get indexed.

Blog can get you some links quick as the content is fresh and most probably related to what is the hot buzz around. It may be long before you get your first organic link to your website.

Even after all this, I say that the website will work better in long term for residual income and blog for regular (may not be residual) monthly income. You need not update it so frequently.

Which one I use to make money online?
I make regular websites for generic content like related to medicine, health, employment, sports etc., but I make blogs for news/views/gadgets type of content. Once in a while I create blog which looks like a website (eg: chemotherapy). The benefit is that, it is easier to update but still visitors don’t expect it to be updated regularly. It also get fetched quickly by search engines.

I used to build static websites myself (using notepad) but after finding wordpress and the benefits of it as it has so many plugins like xml sitemap, review, ratings, dripfeeding etcetc I started to use wordpress as a cms …not to blog but as a platform to build “static” that i build and forget. I must say it works and if you modify the theme you don’t even know it’s a blog unless you look into the code.

    Very good post Jim.
Specially for the beginners and those who cannot develop a code for the WEBSITE, can start with BLOGS or can use modified WP themes for websites.
I would like to add that, both have its own strong points in short and long term.

In my opinion, the best way to get started is to combine between a blog and website and try to connect them to each other.

Yeah 40% of the SEO is finished when a blog is installed.

@Gettycash - Use wordpress even joomla is good for blogging but little complicated

yes i too love wordpress, but I love phpBB alot.

phpBB forum gives u really a more in touch with your users + daily traffic & increases.

    my website started on 18th Feb 2008 & now in 3-4months i hv got 25,000 registered users + daily 5K users > http://warrock-hacks.com

just to let u guys know, but my earnings are very low than compared to the traffic.

You right, chemotherapy is more like website. I think this is an ideal example of combination of website and blog.

In using wordpress for sites other than blogs what are the plugins or modifications that you use in order to eliminate the blog feel?

Exactly.. I also looked a lot of cms and finally ended up with the award winner of best cms i.e.., Wordpress. I can say WP is the best for making a sites which needs to be updated now and then like my Bollywood Celebrities one.. and also for static sites it works cool.. and can be updated easily without writing any codes, just create a page and add content and u r done :P as simple as that.

    Jim, thanks for the advice.

just to give you a heads up; there are a few gramma mistakes on your chemo website. easily picked up by proof reading. perhaps you should get your writers to look in to.

I have to say even though I can code a “normal” website I find with all the time crunch I deal with that it is far easier to just throw a wordpress blog up and tweak the templates to my preference.
As stated above, wordpress is also remarkably easy for those with little coding experience to put together a great site. I found that alot of my php knowledge has come from tweaking the prewritten code in these CMS and Blog suites.
