Case Study: Chemotherapy Site: Follow-Up 2

Monetize your web site

PerformancingAds

Its been long time since I did the follow up on my case study on how to make money online in long term. The case study is based on my site chemotherapy website. The last follow up was on 7th of April. So here is the next follow up.

To remind people, who are not aware of the case study, this case study is to demonstrate how a simple website can make $1000/month after an years time by doing just usual not-so-special content and regular link building, and just giving it the time it needs.

After my first follow up on 7th of April, I gave the website some time to get it settled (in search engines) with 30 pages. Here are the current updates:

  • URL: Chemotherapy Website
  • Goal: Making $1000/month after one year
  • Total time till today: 82 days (around 3 months)
  • Money invested till now: $153.98 (till last update only, no new investment)
  • Total Unique in last 30 days (May): 1129
  • Total page views in last 30 days (May): 4106
  • Number of pages listed by Google: 27
  • More new pages added in this period: 30 (added yesterday)
  • Revenue in last 30 days: Total: $30.36. Out of it, $28.27 is from Adsense (Adsense added on 6th May) and $2.09 from Kontera (Kontera added on 13th May).
  • Website started ranking in top 100 in Google SERPS
  • Total budget available as of now: $500 (started with) - $153.98 (used) + $30.36 (earned) = $376.38

Also as per Google Adsense and Kontera stats, total monthly income is around $39/month (Still long way to go to $1000/month).

Chemotherapy

Whats Next?
Now I have just doubled the content (yesterday) and have already got Google SERP in top 100, I think it is time to go little stronger on link building. With most of the spending budget not being used, I think we can get some good links. I have articles ready for bum marketing. Will start bum marketing as well. Will add some more content in next 30 days.

Hi there. I saw the site and it’s simple, yet informative. Now you said this website started ranking in top 100 in Google SERPS.
I checked and it wasn’t in the top 200. Can you tell me where you check the sites to find their SERPS rankings, please.

    Great blog, btw!

    Himi,
This site is on number 85 in google.co.in …

Hey Jim, I have 2 question

    1. Do you feel that using wordpress platform will give you better result [ as you did not use normal html website ]

    2. I know, you domain is quite old which is helping you a lot. well my question is, if i buy a old domain which was targetting keyword X earlier, and now i make a website on this domain on keyword Y [ as i am not able to find cheap old domain on keyword Y ] So will it be good ? I mean, will it better than you using a new keyword Y domain ??

There are a lot of a hard work to do in a year and an old domain sure give advantage for indexing. Do you stop updating your content when you’re reaching your target after a year? I mean can it become a passive income later on?

  6. kim responded on 31 May 2008 at 12:46 pm #

I also run kontera with adsense. Do you ever think that Kontera takes away from adsense clicks/$? My click through with both combined is excellent, but it concerns me that I am losing money with kontera’s lower paying clicks…

    Thank you!

What link building have you done since the last follow up?

  8. lazyhat responded on 31 May 2008 at 1:03 pm #

Hi Jim can you tell me how you made the links on the WP blog, What is the permalink structure to make them like the ones on this site?

  9. Mickey responded on 31 May 2008 at 1:49 pm #

Great post, as always. One small error, though. You said: “82 days (around 4 months)”. That would be around *3* months, not 4.

I was wondering when there will be another post about this case study. I am partially following your advices and will see how it goes.

  11. Jim Karter responded on 31 May 2008 at 2:33 pm #

@himi, I am seeing the site ranked somewhere in between 80 and 90 from India for keyword “chemotherapy.”

@Neeraj, yes you are right wordpress will not give “better” results, but there is no harm in using it. I don’t use categories and archives at all. So no problem at all. And the ease of use a an added benefit. To answer your second question, the domain would be good if the keywords are related (in the same niche).

@Halim, my idea always is passive income. But in-fact its not always 100% passive. After some time (may be in every 3 to 6 months), you just need to give it little bit push and its back on track again for next 3 to 6 months.

@kim, at per my experiments, kontera never dropped my CTR at Adsense.

@Jeff, None. Not done any link building except a link from one of my other sites.

@lazyhat, The permalink structure on the chemotherapy site is simple custom “/%postname%.html”.

@Mickey, Thanks Mickey for pointing that out. Just fixed it. :)

@Movie Online, The next post on the chemotherapy site will be after 15 days or one month.

Thank you guys for all your comments.

Your case study is very informative. Now the site has PR of 3. What was the PR when you bought the domain? Is there any advantage in buying an aged domain.

  19. chicago web design responded on 01 Jun 2008 at 1:30 am #

That’s very good. $30 a month is what I’m making on some websites that are a couple years old. So you did it in 82 days. That’s impressive. But is $30 all you can extract from 4100 page views? I thought chemotherapy is supposed to be a high value keyword…

    Hi Jim,

I have to say that you did a great job.Congrats for that.

I have a question for you. How do you manage to earn so much from advertisers?
because I had also started a website when you started echemotherapy.com but I earned just $15 and that is also from some paid reviews.
My site got little bit more UV than yours but page views are much less.
So please tell me what to do?

    Thanks.

    hello jim

firstly congratulations for your first income

    I have a question

I am planing to make like your niche site but my english isn’t enough for writing article

Can you advice us where we can get professional writing service(a site name,a person email please)
(I am looking for that in dp forums but I can’t find )

And how much money we should pay for 400-500 words article

  22. Jim Karter responded on 01 Jun 2008 at 3:11 am #

@tansks, somebody in my team wrote them.

@tantowi, if you know some HTML, SSI then you don’t even need wordpress. Else wordpress is best.

@Bud, when I bought the domain, it was PR0

@chicago web design, 4100 is full months impressions, but the ads were put in somewhere in between the month.

@harshads, I would say, finding the “right niche” and the “long tail keywords” are the key.

  23. harshads responded on 01 Jun 2008 at 3:53 am #

    Thanks Jim.
I am working on long tail keywords on my tech related blog and results are as expected but what do you mean by “right niche”?
    Can you give some examples?
Also can I switch over to another related niche with same domain name?
Please explain me ..bit confused! :(

    Jim,
Awesome stuff. I’m considering doing a website based on my current blog. I was considering sitesell, as a friend recommended and I’m not incredibly html savvy. Do you know of this service and you think it’s worth it or doing on your own is totally easy for beginners? Also, can you elaborate on bum marketing? I’ve seen a few times, as I’ve been following, but never see it defined.

Is most of your traffic from google.in? Chemotherapy is such a competitive keyword (over 18 million sites) I still don’t know how you manage to get traffic and serps so fast.

What do you think are the key factors in achieving this?

Do you think having lots of content and submitting to paid directories are key? I see that you haven’t done article submitting yet.

  29. Jim Karter responded on 02 Jun 2008 at 2:32 am #

@harshads, with right niche I meant the niche which has comparatively less competition and better per click payout.

@Zak Show, there seems be be some problem with cforms. I have just upgraded it with the latest version. Please let me know if you get that error again. Thank you for letting me know.

@Everyday Finance, If you know nothing about HTML or online business, then I would say starting with SiteSell is a very good choice. When you done learning, you can move to your own content/pages/hosting etc. stuff.

@make money blog, I just searched using my google toolbar and found that my site is in 1top 100 in SERPS. I know chemotherapy is a very competitive keyword. This is what I wanted to demonstrate here that if you do things the right way and give it the time (as and when site needs it) to grow slowly. Its not very difficult to rank well. As of now, my chemotherapy site doesn’t have too many backlinks. This is what I am starting on right now.

    Good case study Jim.

But, How many visits ‘eChemotherapy’ had (out of 4106 in may) direct from ‘SEARCH ENGINES ONLY’ and visits EXCLUDING from jimkarter.com ??

As I think, that is the ‘ACTUAL PROGRESS’ of eChemotherapy.
    …thanks.

  32. Manish responded on 02 Jun 2008 at 5:46 am #

    i have few questions:

firstly how did you achieve a pr3 in such less time with so little spent on link building.
Also about your case study, can it be duplicated by other sites means not content sites like for example directories and other sites which sell something. What is your opinion can they make 1000$/month after following the steps which you have shown.

  34. webguy responded on 02 Jun 2008 at 10:34 am #

Everyone else expect only 1/4th of the sucess demonstrated here. Because Jim is getting advantage from link and visitors from his site(or network of sites, who know how many?).

Jim Please post the traffic details
% traffic from Search engine. Thats the real acchievment.

If out of 1000 uniques you are getting 900 from Search Engines then it is something commendable.

  35. John Klaps responded on 02 Jun 2008 at 11:08 am #

I agree with webguy. From my estimated guess, out of those 1200 uniques at least a half were from your website and/or direct visitors from people spying on you. As you know you have become quite famous within the make money online niche and attracted a lot of jealous money seekers.

Most of us take the approach to bum marketing very differently. Would you elaborate on your bum marketing techniques and make a whole blog post on it? This would probably make a killer post.

Nice post and informative comments Karamveer. Nice to see you replying to others comments.

  37. Jim Karter responded on 02 Jun 2008 at 1:32 pm #

@Gopal Tripathi, I think around half of those total comes from search engines. Mainly Google.

@Manish, I did not do anything special to get PR3. I am posting everything I am doing. I am sure these techniques can be replicated.

@John Klaps, I consider “$/months” as my measureing method and not how much traffic I am getting. Yes, there are many people visiting from these posts. But you know the webmasters, they are almost banner blind. And even if the click, they will do more harm in long term than any benefit as they will degrade the overall quality of the traffic to the advertisers (which I think Google doesn’t like at all).

No it’s fine now no problem with anti-virus ! Site clean.

  44. jj responded on 10 Jun 2008 at 10:48 am #

The site already has a PR3 after 3 months and 1 link, probably due to old links. In reality it takes a lot more effort than getting 1 link and linking to wiki to get PR3. I wish the study was done from a brand new domain as I think that would be more useful.

I too could buy a PR5 site and say, hey look at me turn this site into $xxxx in 1 year. None of us can tell how influential those old links are. Another person reading this blog will go and buy an old domain with PR0 and probably not get the same results.
