Live Search Sitemap: It Works

live searchDo you create XML sitemaps for Google and submit it regularly? I do it for most of my blog and sites. But do you also submit the same sitemap to Live Search (MSN) too? If not, start doing it from today. It really helps.

I recently did a simple study with live search sitemap. I have a site which has around 3,000 pages. I submit my sitemap to Google and Yahoo regularly. Google sends around 140,000 visitors per month. Yahoo sends around 20,000 visitors per month. Live/MSN was used to send only around 3,000 visitors.

I also checked number of pages listed in various search engines. Google lists around 2,500 of these 3000 pages. Yahoo lists only 560 pages (I don’t know why so less). I also checked with MSN/Live, it listed only 280 of my pages.

Then I submitted my sitemap (same one which I submit to Google) to Live.com. After 15 days, today, I checked the stats. Now live is having around 2,500 of my pages listed. Wow! Does it also increased my traffic? I checked the stats. Yes, it does.

I used to get around 3,000 visitors per month from Live. But this month till June 22nd I have already received 11,000 visitors from Live (and MSN as shown by awstats). I submitted the sitemap to Live.com on 6th of this month only. So just this one step of submitting my sitemap has increase the traffic from Live/MSN to 4 times. Wow! Now I need to do it for all of my sites.

So, here is the moral of the story: Do submit your sitemap to live.com as well.

    Hi,

How can I submit sitemap to live search and yahoo ? Could you give me detail informations please ?

    Thanks

  2. Jim Karter responded on 23 Jun 2008 at 5:18 am #

To submit your sitemap to live.com, just go to the site and click on the link at the bottom of the page saying “Webmasters”. If you have a hotmail/MSN account, then login, else create one.

Then in the webmaster’s interface, you can submit your website link and sitemap.

You also need to verify your site with them.

    Geez…
I’m not joking, I had an average of 1500 indexed pages at Live for one of my websites, 12 hours ago I’ve submitted the sitemap, verified the site and now I have 28.000 !!!

    I am totally overwhelmed…

How long did it take to create 3000+ pages contents? that is just amazing..I guess MSN can pull some nice traffics..

Jim, can you mix with ezinearticles contents with own unique contents? Still google will penalize?

  24. Will.Spencer responded on 24 Jun 2008 at 6:42 pm #

I seldom bother with sitemaps, because all of my sites are easily crawlable.

I was completely shocked to discover that MSN Live had only indexed a single page from one of my PR6 sites. I just submitted a sitemap to MSN for that site.

I’ll monitor that and I’ll also check some of my other sites to see if MSN has missed them.

This should be very embarrassing for Microsoft.

    Thanks Jim!

    Hey Jim,

Really it’s very helpful post…I rarely use Live and didn’t familiar of Live but I submitted sitemap now. Let’s see how it effect to my traffics.

I generally concentrate on Google to get traffics but now I think i have also try to get from Yahoo and Live.

Can we submit sitemap in Yahoo as well?

  30. Jim Karter responded on 25 Jun 2008 at 11:04 pm #

Yes, you can submit the sitemap to Yahoo as well. So, you just need to create only one and submit to all.

I use the XML-sitemap pluging for my wordpress blogs to create sitemap and I use “GSiteCrawler” software (windows based) to create the sitemap for my other websites.

  31. CrownRahul responded on 25 Jun 2008 at 11:52 pm #

Also, what software/tools are you using to create a good sitemap?

  33. siujang responded on 27 Jun 2008 at 1:18 pm #

I didn’t familiar with live before, but I’ll start to use it- include the site map. Hope I’ll get success to drive more traffic besides from google and Yahoo.
