Case Study: Chemotherapy Site: Follow-Up 3

PerformancingAds

I started my chemotherapy case study on 10th March 2008. This is my 3rd follow-up for the same. For the people who are new here, this case study is to show how to make money online in long term. The aim of the website is to make $1000/month at the end of one year.

Last update for this case study was on 31st May where I discussed the stats for the month of May 2008. In this case study I will discuss how the site did in the month of June.

Here are the details:

  • URL: e Chemotherapy
  • Final Goal: Making $1000/month after one year
  • Time Already Over: 115 days (4 months)
  • Money invested till now: $193.98 ($53.98 till last update + $40 for link building this month)
  • Unique visitors in last 30 days (June): 1788 (59% increase from previous month)
  • Total page views in last 30 days (June): 6388 (56% increase from previous month)
  • Number of pages listed by Google: 39 (27 for last month)
  • More new pages added in this period: 3
  • Revenue in last 30 days: Total: $46.58. ($36.82 is from Adsense and $9.76 from Kontera) (53% increase from previous month)
  • Website achieved PR3 (I am surprised how did that happen)
  • Total budget available as of now: $376.38 (last month) - $40.00 (used this month) + $46.58 (earned this month) = $382.96
  • Bum Marketing: 3 articles

Now I think the site is 4 months old, so I can push in marketing it. I plan to spend around $150 to $200 this month in advertising/marketing.

Chemotherapy

Some exponential calculations:
If I am able to increase my traffic and earnings 50% each month, what do you think where I will be after 8 months (i.e. at the end of 12th month for case study?) Here is the little math:

$46.58 * (1 + 0.50)8 = $1193.8

So, now my aim would be to increase traffic and earnings by 50% each month. For some months, it would do better for others it will not reach that point. But that is what I aim would be. If I reach 50% each month, I would be earning $1000+ after 12 months. Also, if I see that I am lagging behind I always have an option to add one more revenue stream in terms of TNX or Text Link Ads or BackLinks based programs.

    Yeeppi!
Case Study is finally out! :)

I like the way you put all things in the post. Thanks for all detailed information.

I have two questions on this.

Q1.Which methods do you use to get the traffic for echemotherapy.com?

Btw I am also working on my site(which is started 4 months ago) as per your suggestions.I have earned more than you earned from echemotherapy.com but from some paid reviews and link selling. Not from ads. :|
Though the earning is good,I’m not getting good traffic like you.

Q2.What can I do to get more no. of unique visitors and page views so that I can earn few from my ads?I am also adding unique content to my site on regular basis but still results are not as expected.
    Please help me.:(

Thanks and Best of Luck. :)

  5. Sam responded on 07 Jul 2008 at 10:02 am #

you have given many quality related permanent links [ even to the sub pages also ] from your other websites, do you think, you can get all them in just $40 ?

  6. Jim Karter responded on 07 Jul 2008 at 10:22 am #

@harshads, now most of the traffic is coming from search engines (except from this blog).

For your second questions, if you are looking something in short term, then you can try social bookmarking stuff, but for longer term, I suggest going for organic SEO only.

@Amit, Thanks Amit for pointing that out. Just fixed it. :)

@Sam, I have leveraged various things here. Personal sites, friends sites, related sites looking for links and money as well. By the way, Sam, are you from Pune (or nearby)?

    Hey there, great stuff.

I just signed up for SiteBuildIt since I’m a site newbie. Finally getting some new blog hacks going with a new blogger template, but your case study here’s been helping to motivate my site direction.

Anyway, on the name, can you elaborate on your thoughts on the “e” in front of a key word? Obviously, it must be OK since you know what you’re doing. But are there any SEO differences/disadvantages in having say, an “e” or an “i” in front of a word as opposed to the word itself or putting dashes in between (for instance e-chemo-medical.com), etc.

Finally, off topic a bit, but on making the jump to Wordpress, I want the most hassle free one step install. I read a note where Dreamhost was a good option, but that’s my only point of reference. I want to: 1) own the domain, 2) get a decent value for my money for 3) a medium sized blog (don’t need tons of storage, etc, I’m a regular “4 figure blogger”).

    Thanks!

i started several sites with yours as a template of sorts 2 months ago.

i had modest steady traffic (15-25) with day to day spikes (35-40) for the past 6 weeks and then it suddenly just went totally flat for the past 2 weeks- like 0-3 visitors per day.

i am not sure why this happened. i don’t think that i got too many backlinks. is this a common pattern for new sites or did i maybe do something incorrectly? if i did something wrong, can it be recovered?

    thanks for your information

  12. Jim Karter responded on 07 Jul 2008 at 9:49 pm #

@Zak Show, Wow. Thats really great to hear.

@Everyday Finance, About putting that “e” in the title of page, its nothing special. Its just the domain I got is echemotherapy.com

@klee, that may not be a common pattern. Either the content may be duplicated or not enough age, or may be just that the content is not enough.

I always admire how you make money online. I think you don’t need until the end of year to make the aim achieved.

@ klee - if your site is a Wordpress blog then take a look at this, sounds like the problem you’re having might be the same, and there are some great tips on how to fix it:

Good way to go Jim! I had a test blog just using blogger by following your method, although it generate small revenue but I can see if we do it in a right way, $1000 per-month sure possible.

  17. klee responded on 08 Jul 2008 at 12:44 pm #

    thanks jim, chris

it may indeed be duplicate content… within the site itself. i have tried to understand in black&white what duplicate content is, but i may have triggered the filter. maybe the content from page to page is too similar. working on this now…

Great post Jim. Interesting to see it coming on well.

So what exactly did your $40 buy you for link building?

  19. Biz Fancy responded on 08 Jul 2008 at 3:41 pm #

This is a fascinating case study, it will be interesting to see if you meet your income goal for this site. I have a bunch of well aged domains in interesting niches and will put some of your findings to use with them. Thanks!

This is a very nice study and it seems that your site is doing well. Do you plan to disclose which sites are you going to advertise this site on (at some point at least)?

    Hey Jim-

Nice going on the traffic stats to your site.

Do you use that template for most of your niche sites, I see you have it similar to this blog. Have you tried testing the sidebar on the left hand side? And then putting Adsense ads there?

    Thanks for the update.

  26. Sam responded on 16 Jul 2008 at 11:49 pm #

Everyday Finance. Wordpress is very easy to install. I use godaddy and I’m sure you can do it with any decent sized web host company. The only thing you need to check for is that you have the webhost gives you a MySql database and your website needs to be Linux, not MS based for the php database.

Once you download Wordpress, they now have Version 2.6, go with that otherwise every time you log on, there will be an annoying message telling you to upgrade, look in the folder for the read me file and that will tell you how to do it in about four easy steps.

If you have any questions, post here and I’ll answer.
