Tips on Increasing your RSS Subscribers

This is a guest post by Suraj from IMBlogger. Suraj is a 15 years old internet entrepreneur from Bangalore, India.

Hi guys,

First of all, I’d like to thank Jim Karter for giving me this great opportunity. Anyways, lets get back to the topic - I am going to share some of my tips with you on how to increase your RSS subscribers. I’ve personally tested this on many of my blogs before and after my experience, I can say that these tactics indeed do work and you’ll see a boost in your subscribers if you take some action. Make sure you’ve got some decent amount of traffic as my methods are mostly about doing some changes in your blog. You’ll not see any/much changes if you’ve got no traffic at all.

Install the “What Would Seth Godin Do” plugin

This is one of the best plugin around to increase your subscribers. This plugin will basically post a message of your choice to visitors. The default setting only shows the message to new visitors and only 3 times. I’d recommend you to change to 0 as it shows the message every time. Please go to the settings page in your admin panel and you’ll see an option to do some changes. Here’s a screenshot that I took just to give the basic idea of what it does.

You can download this plugin here. It also has installation instructions if you don’t know how to do it. ;-)

Use contests

One of my personal favorites! I’ve been using contests and have seen awesome boost in my RSS subscriber list. You can giveaway some domains, hosting, money, gift cards and what not. Ask the visitors to subscribe to your RSS feed to enter the contest. If you’ve got a blog which is fairly big, make sure you’ve asked some people to sponsor your contest. Heck, let me know if you really you’ve a blog which is fairly big - I’ll throw something for sure. Nowadays, it seems that market leverage is sponsoring many contests - contact them and may be they’ll be happy to sponsor your contest.

Don’t write long posts all the time

I’ve seen that people do not tend to read long posts all the time. Long posts are good, but not all the times. Don’t keep making them very often. This will tire your readers and there’s a good chance that they’re going to unsubscribe. This way, you’re going to lose many readers.

Use RSS buttons and e-mail subscription forms

If you look around the blogsphere, you’ll see that most of the bloggers are using RSS buttons and e-mail subscription forms. This is the most important thing you’ll have to do. If you still haven’t installed any RSS buttons or e-mail subscription forms, make sure you’re going to do. You can use Feedburner.com to manage it. You can implement an e-mail subscription form with a RSS button at the sidebar of your blog.

Maxblogpress stripe ad pro

Maxblogpress stripe ad pro is basically a plugin which will display stripe ads on your blog. You can download the plugin and install it. Once you’ve installed, you gotta do some configuration via WP admin panel. This will display stripe ads to all the visitors and you can put some thing like “Subscribe to our RSS feed to receive updates” which will encourage people to subscribe to your feed. This does work and will increase your readers.

There are 100s of more methods to increase your blog subscribers but I wanted to keep the post short and simple so I guess I’ll have to cut it here. I’ve got many more methods, so feel free to contact me if you’re looking for more suggestions and tips. Please do let me know if you enjoy the post - if many people do and if I receive some good comments, I’ll contact Jim Karter and make more parts of this series and share many more of my methods in the near future. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

I can say use RSS images and email forms are the only tip which has worked for me in the past 3 years….

contests are bribes. you get a spike and then it goes down again. It becomes a whole circle itself then.

Good useful post. Will surely implement some them on my blog. :)
But just a thought. Aren’t contests only a short term measure and not necessarily the right way?

  8. Suraj responded on 27 Jul 2008 at 3:48 am #

@Suresh - no idea man. It’s been ages since I last touched blogger blogs and I’ve forgot everything about it.

@Jim - I’d recommend you to implement it before the post, and change the no. of messages to be shown to “0″ (which means unlimited).

Please let me know if you these were helpful tips for you - I’ll try writing up more useful posts if so. :)

I think there is no other better way to increase subscriber instantly than contest. But this way does not guarantee loyal readers once the contest over.
