Case Study: Chemotherapy Site: Follow-Up 4
First of all, sorry guys for not making any post for such a long time. I was really busy with setting up a new venture in Delhi. It seems the idea of the guest posts on my blog didn’t work that well (who told me there is something called free lunch?
) Got lots of thrashing from my readers. But I really took that as a learning and will remember in future. Now that said, lets go to the case study.
As most of you know that I started a long term case study on my chemotherapy website around four and half months back. I decided to follow it up every month, and have posted the previous follow-up here, here and here.
This is the 4th follow up for the case study. Here are the current stats on how the site did in July 2008.
- Long Term Goal: Making $1000/month after one year
- Site in Case: eChemotherapy
- Total time till end of July: Around 4 and half months
- Money invested till now: $193.98 (till last update only, no new investment)
- Total Unique in last month (July): 2296 (1788 last month)
- Total page views in month (July): 7603 (6388 last month)
- Number of pages listed by Google: 59 (it was 39 for last month)
- Revenue in July: Total: $62.61. Out of it, $47.28 is from Adsense and $15.33 from Kontera. (Total of $46.58 for last month)
- Total budget available as of now: $382.96 (last month) - $0.00 (used this month) + $62.61 (earned this month) = $445.57

In my previous posts I said that I would do some link building, bum marketing and some more content. But I could not do any of it because I was busy with other stuff. But even without it, it seems it did well on track. Its around 35% increment in earnings. I needed around 50% increase in earnings per month to reach my target of $1000/month at the end of 12th month.
This month I will be actively working on the site to bring it back on track.
Welcome back!

Also, what do you plan on doing in the upcoming month?
Thanks!

Javier, for content writing I can recommend you to contentmoz.
@Bhushan, adsense is a good place to see how many sites u have and which ones.
Bhushan responded on 13 Aug 2008 at 9:30 am #
Yeah Jim that is the only place which reminds me of the site i have as i have put adsense on all my site.
I am not earning much but something is better than nothing.

Javier responded on 13 Aug 2008 at 2:36 pm #
Are you planning to just use adsense + kontera to get to the $1000 per month goal or are you going to add other revenue streams like some product o membership feature?
Javier responded on 13 Aug 2008 at 2:55 pm #
Hi Jim, the last one.
I noticed that you got backlinks from directories and websites related to health, and you mentioned that you spent money in directory submission.
Did they selectively submit to those sites? Can you give me their contact information?
Thanks again
Steve responded on 13 Aug 2008 at 6:40 pm #
Congrats on the success Jim. I was wondering if you could update us on your traffic sources?
Is it mostly SE or directories?
The highest ranking in google I can find for your meta keywords is 30th?
Congrats again
Steve
Jim Karter responded on 13 Aug 2008 at 9:46 pm #
Most of the traffic is from SE now. Some of it comes from this blog (case study) and some from other medical websites where I got links.
Jim Karter responded on 13 Aug 2008 at 9:47 pm #
As of now I am using Adsese+Kontera only. But will be using some others as well with time.

Let me get this straight your target is $1,000 a month after a whole year?
Heck if i launch a site and it’s not on track to earn $1,000 in month 2 i class it as a failure.
If it’s not pulling 1k in 3 months scrap it, but a year? Come on, maybe i should start a make money blog because this is seriously lame.
Dean responded on 19 Aug 2008 at 6:15 am #
Opti,
Yes, why don’t you instead of wasting your time writing lame comments on Jim’s blog.
I’m sick of people that talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Set up your blog and post your url so people can follow your progress to see how marvellous you are.
Dean
Jim Karter responded on 19 Aug 2008 at 8:32 am #
Opti, you can have very different idea of making money fast. I may be have different idea of making money slowly but replicating it 100 times.
So it depends of person to person. Best of you luck for your sites, though I am not much surprised to “not see” any URL on your name while entering the comments.

Hi Jim
I was following your progress and I think you’re teaching me a lot, thanks for that.
I have a question; why do you only fill in the keyword meta tag on the home page? I don’t see any keyword meta tag on other pages.
Thanks
Jim Karter responded on 19 Aug 2008 at 7:56 pm #
DDC, I am using wordpress as the CMS system for it. To enter description and keywords I use “All in One SEO” plugin.
All the pages should have keywords and description. I think I missed out on them. Thanks for reminding. I will be adding them today.

hi jim,
Thanks for explaining your strategy in such a clear way and for sharing so many tips.
One thing I am curious about is how you find such high paying adsense keywords? I have similar number of pageviews on my sites, but I am not earning nearly as much revenue.

Hey Jim, few questions.
As I am going to try and replicate your style with my own site, I was wondering.
- How long do you keep the wikipedia link up for? I have a single page, just meta info and a link to a wikipedia page on my niche.
- Once I can take the link down, I’m going to put up my wordpress site and a few articles. I’ll then submit the site to a few directories, stumble a few articles, etc, etc… This is good, right?
- Probably the most important question, how do I start seeing visitors? I just can’t see people “finding” my site with just a few articles and such.
Help appreciated.
Keep up the good work.

I don’t know Jim will achieve a $1000 income with a static website, cause I hardly get a 1-2 dollars (30-60$ month) with my daily updated blog that has about unique 500 visitors each day.

Ralph responded on 02 Sep 2008 at 12:57 pm #
Yeah, thing is, it depends on what your blog is about.
Example-
You have a Make Money Online blog with Kontera on it. Odds are, your visitors are web-savvy, and know those links are ads. Thus, they avoid them. (Or have ad blockers on)
OR… you have a site about chemotherapy. Odds are, your visitors are of the older population, just looking for information. They see the Kontera links and click them, they don’t know better.

daniel responded on 06 Sep 2008 at 4:50 am #
hi Jim
I was looking at your site but cannot find your KONTERA ads anywhere…
can you just direct me to where they are, i know these days a lot of the new firewalls and browsers have started to block adds and i dont know how much longer our marketing income will be based on these.
The latest esset firewall blocks adsense by default now so goodluck if all your income are not split and diversified.
anyways the kontera?

Can you tell me how you were able to get so many links.
how many are paid links
how many are links from your own site.
do you recommend creating a mininet(like revenge of mininet) of websites to use them to get links for new websites?
plz answer the mininet question.
