Terrorist Attack Harms Even My Sites

Well, not literally.

But due to that terrorist attack in the city of Mumbai (India), traffic on some of my sites was reduced for around 2 to 3 days. Most hurt sites were educational and job related sites.

After the terrorist attack on Wednesday evening, the traffic reduced for the day. On Thursday, for some of my sites the traffic was reduced to around 50%. And so were the earnings.

Have a look at the traffic stats for one of my job related site, which is showing that the traffic for Thursday (27 Nov 2008) was reduced to half. The traffic slowdown even carried to Friday and somewhat on Saturday as well.

traffic reduced due to terrorism

When I checked my stats for those days, I thought may be something went wrong. May be I lost some search engine rankings, or one of my servers went down temporarily. I checked all of it. No rankings were down. No server went out. The traffic was reduced for many of the sites and across the servers. So the only explanation I could give myself was that this happened only due to that terrorist attack in Mumbai.

Did any of your site suffer such attacks? Or, did you even check your stats for those days yet?

True!! everyone was glued to the Television to see whats happening in the terror attack places in Mumbai.. so high traffic for news channel :)

  2. Dirk responded on 01 Dec 2008 at 2:38 am #

This weekend was Thanksgiving weekend in the States, that’s the main reason you had less visitors.

  3. ROW responded on 01 Dec 2008 at 2:58 am #

    Same here Jim.
Also, I agree with Dirk. Whenever there is a holiday in US, traffic dips on my education related blogs.

TOI says that it has got 9 million views on those 2 days :)
Every one is eager to know whats the present

Yep, check your US traffic. Unless your site is about football or turkey-preparing, you saw a big drop last Thursday for the holiday.

  6. Mega Champ responded on 01 Dec 2008 at 8:46 am #

Indian traffic must have been affected due to the Mumbai attack, even i was glued to TV all day long, Pretty dark 3 days.

  7. Gustafson responded on 01 Dec 2008 at 10:07 am #

Your traffic for for the holiday days appears to match your weekend traffic pretty well.

That tells me that a significant amount of your traffic normally comes from people looking at your content from their places of employment.

If you have Google Analytics try to run a search to determine the traffic change by region. If the main change is the USA, then you should be pretty sure that the reason is due to holiday schedule changes.

I am a first year adsense publisher. The last week in November saw a 40% drop in daily earning. (I have sites mainly in health and cosmetic surgery in English.) Is this typical for you? Thanks…

this is an undeniable example of the interconnectedness of absolutely everything in this speeded-up world. while that can at times be a positive, we see one piece of the downside in your reports.

this is also true environmentally. more plastic bags get tossed in city A and fish drop dead in ocean B.

    talk about universal!

My traffic takes a dive every year at that time because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

My prayers have been with you and everyone in India. Such a tragedy, the terrorist attacks were.

Nope…never had a site suffering from such an attack, but I know many families who’s relatives died that would have not wanted to read such post…sorry to say that.

  18. kent responded on 02 Dec 2008 at 10:53 am #

    In jim’s defense:
Learn SEO, do we really have to be so ridiculously politically correct to mention the obvious, that these things are very upsetting, sad and frightening? This is after all a “make money online” site.

  19. Make Affiliate Money responded on 02 Dec 2008 at 12:52 pm #

It affected only Indian traffic based sites.

  20. AllofInterest responded on 02 Dec 2008 at 3:47 pm #

It was ThanksGiving, thats why some of my blogs traffic was reduced but this one ,I got flood of traffic.

Terrorism hurts everybody, everything some or the other way, that is also correct

Jim, have you ever used any HYIP ?

  21. Envirogle responded on 02 Dec 2008 at 5:01 pm #

The terrorists used AK’s and Grenades???, why not just a bomb?, just a question.

    @jim

Are most of your sites indian based?

The 9 day wait for the post was painful :D

    I wish i had your traffic :)

  24. Envirogle responded on 03 Dec 2008 at 10:50 pm #

    @picture

It takes time and great enthusiasm for the niche to be able to build up traffic.

If you had Jim’s traffic, you will lose most of it in under a week, and have nothing in two weeks time.

It is not only about getting the traffic but keeping it.

10k-20k uniques daily is definitely realistic, not easy, but with some determination and good niche selection, great content and advertising you will get that traffic.

  29. tkada.com responded on 10 Dec 2008 at 5:46 am #

It is not because of any other reason, whether server or rank down, anything other than that but all because of the devastation due the terrorist attack in Mumbai-India, as What you told, where people affixed to television focusing into the news clips relating force full consequence of Mumbai city.
And we too had affected by the drawn-down traffic of our site.

  34. ZK@WebTrafficROI.com responded on 28 Jan 2009 at 9:53 am #

So that means most part of traffic to your websites are coming from India. And if Mumbai play a significant role than I am sure you got less traffic.

That’s why I prefer to have such websites which have international market and traffic.

  35. Abhijeet Mathur responded on 24 Oct 2009 at 10:50 pm #

Your traffic has certainly reduced but it is very high as compared to other bloggers.
