Top Mistakes Newbies Make

Here are some of the biggest mistakes newbies make. If you are a newbie and making any of these mistake, its time to take your lesson.

This post is for people who are just planning to enter into an online business and want to make money online. With the economy going south and the more and more job losses everyday, this post can be helpful for those people.

So, have a look:

  1. Not believing that money can be made online.
  2. Assuming that making money online is very easy.
  3. Giving up too early (actually, at a time when you are just going to make it).
  4. Starting a “how to make money online blog.”
  5. Buying all those “make quick money” ebooks for $10 to $100 each on digital point forum.
  6. Starting many things together and loosing enthusiasm in completing them.
  7. Creating an e-commerce site (based on BANS etc.) of hundreds of pages and assuming sales will come.
  8. Entering into a niche which they know nothing about. Just entered because it is a profitable niche.
  9. Targeting very generic niches and not giving much attention to long tail keywords.
  10. Not having anybody for their help (its not their mistake, but still).
  11. Not willing to spend any money or actually spending too much money (without know that it will produce results or not).
  12. Assuming that they are clever than search engines/advertisers and breaking their TOS.
  13. Using those link farms to get easy links.
  14. Spamming social networking sites and then getting banned.

These are the few which are coming to my mind right now. Do you know some more and would like to add here, please add them.

in this list 3,5 and 6 are most common.

    3. especially they want a big success on the day first and it is not true in this blogging world as here you have to wait and work hard and success will surely knock your door.

    5. Crap… actually by selling those kind of books owner is making money not you… keep this thing in mind.

    6. Go step by step… today you see one niche and start related blog then carry on that for sometime… dont start another blog tommorrow if you are totally new to this.

by the way really nice tips jim.

    thx for sharing.

    Hi Jim,
Most of the points you have mentioned are true. Well Since I am not in this blogging world. I just created another new blog about How to Make Money Online

It’s kinda combination of website + blog. Just have a look, how is it. Your comment will be much appreciated. Here is the blog affiliatepaymoney.com

    Hey Jim,

What I have seen most goes with the second point you mentioned. People think making money online should be very easy and when they don’t get that expected return they loose interest.

I started blogging this Feb and now I have around 10-12 blogs. I am trying my luck with Google, Kontera, Affiliate networks, voice ads, video ads and definitely my earnings have increased then what it was in the beginning.

I will like to ask you a few things:
-How much time your first blog took to start paying you $1000 a month?

-As you mention you have many blogs, how you manage time to maintain blogs, I only have twelve and all on different topics so sometimes one or the other blog of mine is completely neglected

I am completely agree Jim, they are a lot of people who try to enter the Make Money Online business everyday but a lot of them give up in the first months, because it’s not that easy to manage an online business.

I wrote a post about some myths that new bloggers still believe in, kind of things that everyone should know ;)

Good stuff as alway Jim :)

What can one do about number 10
“Not having anybody for their help (its not their mistake, but still).” ?

I’ve tried many of the forums including DP etc..I think your advice is most useful than most of these other sites.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ps: earlier during the year, I was going to ask you about one to one help from you (with an appropriate fee of course) would this be feasible ?

    - Starting a “how to make money online blog.”
    - Buying all those “make quick money” ebooks for $10 to $100 each on digital point forum.

By far the two best in that list :D, mainly because those are so true.

  12. Gopal Tripathi responded on 04 Dec 2008 at 2:50 am #

    Nice post Jim.
I would like to add :
Every newbie wants to make quick money online, so starts few blogs on profitable but saturated niches, which is very easy to establish but hard to continue in long run coz it needs targeted audience, consistency and new posts every day. They lose interest in it as time passes.
I would suggest for them to begin with a small site with 50-100 pages in the niche of own interest, learn with it every aspect of online biz, establish, optimize and promote it, then move to the next sites as many as they want.
    ….am I right?

  16. Mega Champ responded on 04 Dec 2008 at 6:55 pm #

I never really bought anything, not any mony making ebooks or so. Only problem i faced in starting was to continue working even though the adsense was showing $0.01 daily earnings for so many days, which made me thought is it really worth it. But i continued working and now results are well say pretty different :-)

  17. Niz responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 1:58 am #

    15. Wasting too much time to keep on learning new things and never taking actions (about what you already know).

    16. Trying to be a perfectionist.

  18. Puspanjali responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 9:50 am #

That is very true in my case. How could you be so accurate in pinpointing the problem?
In my case information overload is the problem.
Taking less action and spending too much time trying to learn the hidden magic secrets.Thank goodness I have not wasted any money so far.
And I have learned my lesson too.

  19. kim responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 1:27 pm #

  20. Vandita responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 4:25 pm #

Well, I don’t agree about reading blog, I mean I got tons of traffic ideas and many other tips by reading others blog and to see how they are promoting their blogs.

For few months of my blogging time I didn’t even knew about Feedburner,I started few months back (I saw it some blog)

    Hi Jim,

I am one of that person.. I heared that people can earn good by adsense. i setup 80 blogs with different domains.. and was entering post into that.. and I saw adsense i got 1$,2$.. I was happy I thought this way I will add more post and wil earn more money .. and now after a year.. i m just earning 4-5$ a day….. I was really feeling bad by that..

even once I setupped few stores of ecommerce but nothings work this way… all chaos… nothing in my hand..

  25. Dean James responded on 07 Dec 2008 at 11:36 pm #

The biggest thing that needs to be overcome is mindset. Once you have the right mindset and believe that you can achieve something and then take action, you can do almost anything. If, somewhere deep inside you think you are going to fail or are scared of succeeding, then that will be the result ( failure ).

    Dean

  26. Mega Champ responded on 10 Dec 2008 at 8:25 am #

@harshal setting up 80-90 blogs may not help you in making money, which you can make if you keep a single website or blog and post everyday. Build links and keep it updated. If you would have done like that, your earnings surely must have been more.

  27. Ryan responded on 11 Dec 2008 at 6:29 am #

RE: Giving up too early (actually, at a time when you are just going to make it).

Hi Jim, I think this is a great tip here. Many people tend to expect great things over night, but it is clear that it can takes years and years of consistent effort to become a true success. People give up right at the time when positive things may start happening and once they do, I imagine that the inspiration from seeing the progress will ignite the final spark. If your passionate about something, then NEVER give up on the dream.

Keep up the great work Jim.

  28. Liar Liar responded on 12 Dec 2008 at 12:20 am #

You say do not buy ebooks. While you bought this ebook yourself. comeon! stop lying.

  29. Vandita responded on 12 Dec 2008 at 12:18 pm #

I agree a little that having a number of blogs will not help in earnings, but I don’t agree with it fully.

I started blogging this Feb and slowly and gradually I created some more blogs, one in a month or sometime two in 10 days and they all helped me increasing my earnings.

What helps in earning is advertising. I advertise but I don’t have money like Jim :) so I just advertise for free and two of my blogs have 10,000+ visitors .

  30. Srednarb responded on 13 Dec 2008 at 7:58 am #

I do agree on creating an instant make money online blog where in fact one is just earning a buck or less in PTC, another one is those ebook on DP, ah well, most of them have the same content

  31. Dean James responded on 13 Dec 2008 at 5:16 pm #

Nothing wrong with buying ebooks as long as you read the material in them and then take action with anything new you have learnt. The big mistake is to buy an ebook, download it then leave it sitting on your hard drive doing nothing. Then go and buy another. That is a recipe for no income.

    Dean

  32. Guttu responded on 19 Dec 2008 at 5:23 am #

I liked the 9th point. Its really true. No one tries to be different. They just imitate what successful bloggers do. Either start writing on “how to make money by blogging” or “how to blog”. I tried something different. I am getting some good response, though not in terms of traffic.

  33. Dorian responded on 19 Dec 2008 at 10:47 am #

    Hey Jim,
I wonder, and I would like your opinion :
directories submitting : is it dead ?

I submit my sites on hundreds of directories, but since mid 2008 i think its much less effective than before and hardlinks on deep pages pr0 is useless now.. what do you think ?

Excellent tips. I think a lot of new players to Internet Marketing believe because so many people are making money online that it is easy and in many cases it just is not.

  39. Desmond responded on 26 Jan 2009 at 1:16 am #

How about this one. Telling people that you are a newb. I made the mistake of doing that and a guy wanted to charge me $50.00 for an article. Good thing I knew better. Never tell people you outsource to that you’re a newbie.

Less aware from the latest invention.

In the initial day they will post two to three post in a day and after few days nothing.

  41. Envirogle responded on 02 Feb 2009 at 8:35 pm #

    @ Mr Ex Back

How old are you, and why can’t you make money.

Few ways to make money :

    - Go to DP and get a job posting on forums, you can get $10/100 posts, 100 posts/1.5 hours, easy. Get 2 jobs a day, that is $560/month.

    - Submit Manually to Article directories, bookmarking sites, etc, 100 submissions = $4-$6, 100sub/1.5hour, work 3 hours each day you get $360/month

    - Become a Craiglist poster, post ads on Craigslist and get paid.

These are just the basics, so many other ways to make money some taking a little more skill, some software, accounts etc.

But there definitely are ways to make money online.

    @ SEO Cases

So true, to many think it is too easy, and because of this, when they don’t make money, or make money to a certain standard, one way to high, ie, $250/day after a month, they give up.

Saying they just aren’t good enough, or there is always some trick.

The most annoying thing I see is newbies being conned out of their money by “gurus” offering training in affiliate marketing when there is so much free information available.

  43. Travel Dude responded on 09 Feb 2009 at 8:32 am #

    9. Targeting very generic niches and not giving much attention to long tail keywords.

I don’t think having a blog about a broad niche is that bad, even for a newbie. But then, blogs are not that profitable.
